Tornikes, 11th century. Seal (Lead, 21 mm, 5.14 g, 12 h). [M/I] - A/X St. Michael, nimbate, standing facing, wearing loros and holding trefoil scepter in his right hand and globe in his left. Rev. +ΘKЄ RO[HΘ, TⲰ Δ૪ΛⲰ C૪ TⲰ]PNIKH around monogram TⲰPNIKI. Unpublished in the standard references. Struck on a short flan, otherwise, good very fine.

From an important collection of Roman and Byzantine seals, tesserae and amulets, formed before 2021.


The Tornikioi were a well-known Armenian noble family who held high-ranking positions in the Byzantine Empire.
